Drilled Micropiles – First Citizens Bank

Carmel Commons, Charlotte, North Carolina

Morrison Engineers designed and installed 71 permanent micropiles as deep foundation support for a new branch of First Citizens Bank in Charlotte, N.C.

The proposed structure was to be constructed on the site previously occupied by another single story building that had incurred significant settlement issues due to the underlying subsurface strata. The preconstruction geotechnical report recommended undercutting the site of up to 15 feet of the unsuitable existing soil.

With the site located at the intersection of two major thoroughfares, an excavation of that magnitude would have created significant access and logistic issues. Morrison Engineers developed, designed and installed the deep foundation micropile system with low capacity, compression piles that could be quickly and efficiently installed.

The pile installation was completed in five working days with significantly less effort, time, and cost impact than undercutting the project site. This allowed the contractor, Denver Construction, to deliver the project back to the client on the shortest possible project schedule.
