CFPUA Barnard’s Creek Pump Station
The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority planned permanent upgrades to the existing Barnard’s Creek Pump Station to meet the future needs of the service area located along the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Morrison Engineers designed an excavation shoring solution for the installation of a cast-in-place concrete pump station structure. Due to site constraints, as well as a required excavation depth of 44 feet, Morrison Engineers proposed an innovative circular cofferdam structure with a 77-foot diameter, consisting of steel sheet piling supported by reinforced concrete waler rings.
This cofferdam solution provided cost savings to the client in both time and material. Its circular shape allowed the contractor to excavate the area for the pump station unobstructed and afforded the contractor additional room on a site with a very limited work area.
